Lillian La Veta Newton

Lillian La Veta (Gray) Newton, 88, of Union, died July 2 at her residence at Jodi's Foster Care in Union. A visitation will run from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at Grays West & Co. Pioneer Chapel. A graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at the North Powder Cemetery. Pastor Garth Johnson will officiate. A coffee hour will follow the service at the home of Clark and Betty Gray in Telocaset.

Lillian was born July 3, 1921, to John and Erma (Scott) Gray in Ione. Lillian graduated from Napa Union High School in Napa, Calif., on June 18, 1943.

She did her Nurse Cadet Corps training at Eastern Oregon College in December 1944. She continued her nurse's training at St. Anthony's in Pendleton and graduated in September 1947. Lillian met her husband, Fred, in California and they were married on April 24, 1945, in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho. The couple lived in Pendleton while Lillian finished nurse's training and eventually settled in Milton-Freewater.

Lillian and Fred traveled extensively exploring the national monuments of the United States while she continued her career in nursing. She worked in local hospitals throughout the Northwest.

Lillian enjoyed traveling, walking on the beach, gardening, needle point, embroidery and sharing her travels with her friends and family. She always enjoyed the times when family and friends would get together at holidays and special occasions.

Lillian is survived by her brothers, Clark Gray of Telocast and Gerald Gray of North Powder; sisters, Leona Scott of Wallowa, Beulah Talley of Lostine and Marilyn McIntyre of Union; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Fred; father, John; mother, Erma; brother, John; and sisters, Lenis and Lela.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to charities that encourage and support the nursing field or charities that are concerned with Parkinson's Disease or cancer in care of Gray's West & Co. Pioneer Chapel, 1500 Dewey Ave., Baker City 97814.
