Lewis Maynard Carper

January 29, 1922 — March 2, 2009

Lewis Maynard Carper, 87, of La Grande, died March 2 at his home.

A viewing will run from 8 to 9 a.m. Saturday prior to the service and also concluding the service. The service will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Loveland Funeral Chapel.

Lewis was born Jan. 29, 1922, to Charles Paris and Bertha (Doud) Carper in Promise. He was raised and educated in Promise at the Riverside School. He played guitar, fiddle and harmonica. He enjoyed woodworking. He made tables and chairs out of trees using a chainsaw. He always was helping people in need with woodcutting. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He was married to Wilda Pullen from 1945 to 1948. They had a daughter, Darlene.

He married Rose Ray in 1954 and they had five children.

He is survived by his wife, Rose; children, Darlene Hansen of Pilot Rock, Robin (Sherri) Carper of Spokane, Timothy (Janis) Carper of Enterprise, Cynthia Carper of La Grande, Cheryl (Steve) Nuttall of Hillsboro and Sheila Carper (David Nemec) of Seattle; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters, Luella Skillings, Ivan Carper, Orval Carper, Lillian, Garrett, Melvin Carper, Ethel Burnett, Ralph Carper, Roy Carper, Robert Carper, Emma Lindsey, Willard Carper, Harold Carper, Howard Carper and Edith Lindsey.
