Leona B. Stanley

August 23, 1913 — September 29, 2004

Leona B. Stanley, 91, of Walla Walla and formerly of La Grande died September 29, 2004 at a care center. Viewing will be from 7-9pm at Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main, Milton-Freewater. A graveside will begin at 11 a.m. Monday at the Athena Cemetery with Pastor John Nichols of the Athena Baptist Church officiating.

Mrs. Stanley was born August 23, 1913, to James Leroy and Susanna Leona Dowdy Brewer in Winlock, Washington. She graduated from Camas High School in 1932 and worked as a secretary in Winlock, in Tacoma, Washington and at Fort Lewis. On November 11, 1945 she married Alfred W. Stanley in Winlock. The family lived in many places through her husband's military career. After his retirement they moved to Oregon City and in 1959 to La Grande where she worked at the library until she retired in the late 1970's. In 1999 they moved to Athena to be near family.

She was a member of the La Grande Methodist Church and the Order of Eastern Star. She enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles, playing the piano and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her children and their spouses, Sheri and Steve Pyle of Athena and John and Margaret Stanley of Palmdale, California; four grandchildren; five great grandchildren; a brother, Jerry Brewer of Winlock and other relatives. Her husband died earlier.

Memorials may be made to the Weston-McEwen Pipes and Drums.
