Mary “Leona” McLain, age 84, nearly a lifelong resident of La Grande, died Tuesday March 26 at her home.
A celebration of her life was held Sunday, March 31 at Trinity Baptist Church at 12:30 p.m. Interment will be at Hillcrest Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center.
Leona was born on January 31, 1935 in La Grande to Glenn and Sadie (Nedrow) Tetrick. She was educated in La Grande, graduating from high school with the class of 1953 before she attended Eastern Oregon College for a short time. On November 6, 1954 she was married to David McLain in La Grande. Other than two years spent in Anchorage, Alaska she lived in La Grande.
She was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church where she attended prayer meetings on Wednesday. She also enjoyed several lunch groups especially the Thursday group that called themselves the Posse. She loved to read, was an amateur novelist and enjoyed taking drives through the valley. She had a big heart for animals and took in and cared for many strays over the years,
Survivors include her children, Cory of Milwaukie, Greg of La Grande, Tamra Staley of Pendleton, Talia Welch of La Grande; 8 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; her two best friends, Gerry Marcum and George Neer, both of La Grande and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Jess Tetrick and her husband David McLain.
