Lee Donald 'Don' Smith, age 94, of La Grande, died December 12, 2014 at his home. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 20, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at Daniels~Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration, 1502 7th Street in La Grande.
Don was born on August 21, 1920, the son of William Albert and Della Marie (Wetzel) Smith in Durham, Missouri. He attended grade school and part of high school in Missouri before moving to La Grande in 1936. After high school he attended three years at an Aircraft Tech School. During World War II he served in the Army Air Corps with the 58th Fighter Group. After his honorable discharge he was a freight driver between Pendleton and Portland until 1950 when he went to work for Union County Grain Supply until 1958 when he went to work for Grange Wholesale driving truck from 1958 until 1963. In 1964 he went to work for Powder River Livestock. In 1969 he was transferred to Texas. While working there he also owned a Sears store. In 1987 he moved back to La Grande. In 1988 he went to work for the La Grande Athletic Club. In his younger years he enjoyed roller skating at Zuber Hall. He also enjoyed bowling, skiing, hunting. He was a member of the VFW and Elks.
Survivors include his children, Cheryl Ann Stone and husband, Lloyd of Burbank, Washington, Donna Lee Hughes of Portland and Gary and Cheri Smith of Baker City; six grandchildren; Maverick Fisher, Jon Fisher, Sean Bowen, Jennifer Raymond, Adam Smith and Carlyn Smith; 16 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by brothers, Winston Aldo Smith and Delmar Smith and two step grandchildren.
