Lawrence Lyman Veal

February 16, 1932 — April 12, 2006

Lawrence "Larry" Lyman Veal, age 74, of La Grande died from complications of Parkinson's Disease April 12, 2006 at a small group care home. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints stake center on Gekeler Lane in La Grande. Viewing will be from 12 to 12:45p, at the church.

Mr. Veal was born February 16, 1932 in La Grande to Otis Branson and Winona Lyman Veal. As a youngster, Mr. Veal attended Ackerman and Central schools. He graduated from La Grande High School and was the senior class president with the Class of 1950.

In 1948, Mr. Veal attended Moler Barber College in downtown Portland. He had to attend night school at the old Lincoln High School. He graduated from barber college and returned to La Grande to finish high school. He worked as an apprentice barber after school, on Saturdays and during the summer.

Mr. Veal then attended Eastern Oregon College and graduated in 1955 with a bachelor's degree in elementary education. In 1965 he received a master of science degree in elementary education. He received a second master's degree in guidance and counseling from Oregon State University and later he completed a doctor's degree in the same subjects from OSU.

During his years in education he taught fifth and sixth grades at two grade schools, eigth grade English and was a counselor at three high schools. He taught graduate students one summer at OSU. In 1977, Mr. Veal began selling plumbing and electrical supplies in La Grande. He enjoyed working in the store and found happiness in helping customers solve their problems. He retired due to the Parkinson's diagnosis. A grandson, Ryan Hildebrandt, now owns Dome Plumbing and Electrical. Mr. Veal enjoyed serving in the LDS church in many capacities, spending time with his family and helping others.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Ruth; his children, Stephen and Connie Lyman of Olathe, Kansas and Ava and Lanny Hildebrandt of La Grande; 10 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and three grandnieces and grandnephew. Two younger brothers, Ted and Jim died in 1994.

Memorials may be made to the La Grande Family History Center.
