Larry McCarter entered into rest peacefully at his home in La Grande on the morning of March 14, 2005 after a lengthy illness resulting from military service.
Larry was born on February 14, 1952, an Aquarian in the Year of the Dragon. He served in the Coast Guard from 1972 to 1978, and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, and the Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation Award.
Larry graduated in 1989 with a BS in General Studies from EOU, where he founded the first Gay/Lesbian/Bi-sexual student group on campus. Larry was a gifted mechanic and worked for the Corps of Engineers at Monumental Dam. For the past eight years he and his partner owned and operated Finishing Touch, a janitorial service in La Grande.
Larry enjoyed organic gardening, snow boarding, welding, riding his Harley, remodeling his home, spending time with his partner and family, and traveling. His travels took him to all but 3 states in the US. Larry especially loved to hear the ocean waves crashing on the shore.
Larry is survived by his husband of fifteen years, Bill Harmon, La Grande, sons, Shaun McCarter, Seattle, Washington and Silas McCarter, Bellingham, Washington, and brother, Doug McCarter and sister-in-law, Oscille, of Monterey, CA.
A memorial gathering for family and friends will be held at Bill and Larry's home Thursday, March 17th, beginning at 2pm, all are welcome. Contributions may be made to the Larry McCarter Memorial Scholarship Fund at EOU, or to Trees East of La Grande, through Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 7th Street, La Grande, Oregon 97850.
