Larry Ray Carpenter

May 12, 1949 — February 28, 2014

Larry Ray Carpenter, age 64, of La Grande, died February 28, 2014 at his home following a 14 month battle with cancer. A gathering to celebrate his life will be held at the La Grande Country Club on March 15, 2014 from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. A BYOB/potluck wake will follow at the family's home. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations may be made to one's favorite charity. Arrangements are entrusted to Daniels~Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center.

Larry was born on May 12, 1949, the son of Raymond Francis and Helen Frances (Shaw) Carpenter in Baker City, Oregon. The family moved to La Grande in 1956 and he attended La Grande High School. He served with the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He worked as a supervisor for Boise Cascade for over 30 years. On September 2, 1984 he married Barbara McLean. He was a member of the gun club. He was an avid fly fisherman and loved it most when teaching his family how to fish. He loved teaching and sharing his knowledge with so many people. He also loved to hunt.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Carpenter of La Grande; children, Carmen Kamaunu of Federal Way, Washington, Larry Renn Carpenter of Spokane, Washington and Kyle Ray Carpenter of La Grande; sister, Sharon Kay Carpenter of Corvallis; three grandchildren, Sheldon, Morgan and Joseph; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. As Larry would say "Where's the gin and squirt."
