Karen was born on March 2, 1945, the daughter of George William and Garnet Gertrude (Vollrath) Schafer in North Bend, Oregon. She attended schools in Coos Bay and graduated from Marshfield High School with the class of 1963. On December 24, 1976 she married Ronald Gewecke in Belflower, California. They moved to La Grande shortly after their marriage and owned and operated "The Trophy Case" until illness forced her retirement.
Karen was a member of the La Grande-Union County Chamber of Commerce and the Corvette Club. She was a devoted community member and she received a special recognition award from the Chamber for her dedication to our community. She loved gardening, as evidenced in the area around her business and she always had her business decorated for every holiday. Her husband, Ronald, preceded her in death in 1996.
Survivors include her daughter, Kathy Higgins of La Grande; grandchildren, Karly R. Knapp and Aria Higgins of La Grande; and other relatives and friends.
Those who wish may make contributions to the Karen Gewecke Memorial Fund in care of Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 7th Street, La Grande, Oregon 97850.
