Joyce RaLae Challis, 67, of Umatilla and formerly of Elgin, died March 18 surrounded by her family at her home. Funeral services will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Umatilla ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Burial will follow at the Sunset Hills Cemetery in Umatilla.

She was born April 21, 1943, at Salt Lake City to Raymond and Alice Leora (Payne) Hollingsworth. She was raised in Elgin and graduated from high school there. She graduated from Pendleton Beauty College with honors.
On Feb. 18, 1973, she married Eugene O. Challis at Winnemucca, Nev. They lived in Pendleton for a short time before moving to Umatilla in 1976. Joyce ran her own home interior business for several years.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Elgin.
She enjoyed crocheting, ceramics, doll-making, puzzles and she loved her family and taking care of her husband, Gene.
She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Eugene Challis of Umatilla; children, Robert Eugene Challis of Umatilla, Mary Kay Morgan-Bork of Pendleton, Linda NaDeane Morgan-Self of Hermiston, Kevin Ray Morgan of Stanfield, Tamera Ilene Rafferty of Prosser, Wash., and Cynthia Irene Prewitt of Hermiston; three sisters, Deanna Hylton of Elgin, Danise Wheeler of Molalla and Viki Davidson of Mulino; 22 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Leora Hollingsworth; and brother, LeeRay Hollingsworth.
