Josie Eveline Witherspoon, age 94, of La Grande and formerly of Elgin, died Monday, April 5, 2004 at her home. A graveside service will be held on Friday, April 9, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Elgin Cemetery with Pastor John McElravy officiating. Friends may call on Thursday from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. at Daniels Chapel of the Valley.
Mrs. Witherspoon was born on June 9, 1909, the daughter of William and Lizzie Jane (Chase) Robbs in Summerville, Oregon and spent her entire life in the Grande Ronde Valley. She attended grade school in Summerville and graduated from high school in Imbler. In May of 1935 she married Raymond Waelty in Walla Walla, Washington. They had two daughters and he preceded her in death in October of 1983. On July 18, 1987 she married Perry Witherspoon and he preceded her in death on January 5, 2002.
Mrs Witherspoon was an active member of the Elgin Christian Church. She was a member of the Cricket Flat Grange, the Elgin Farm Bureau and the American Legion. She enjoyed her family, her home and farming. She enjoyed picking huckleberries and gathering mushrooms. She did many handicrafts and was an excellent quilter.
Survivors include her daughters, Myrna Davis of Gresham and Joyce Lindsay of Belfair, Washington; five grandchildren; six great grandchildren; nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. Eight siblings preceded her in death.
