Jolene Nona Quintal, 71, of Summerville and formerly of Milton-Freewater, died May 17 at her home after a year-long battle with esophageal cancer. Her family was by her side.
A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at Loveland Funeral Chapel in La Grande. Burial will be at the Weston Cemetery.
Jolene was born Feb. 22, 1940, to Sheridan and Muriel O'Dell at Reno, Nev. She grew up in Gerlock and Fernley, Nev., where she met and married Ken Quintal in 1960. They had two children. After living in the Northwest, they moved back to Reno where Jolene was employed as a 21 dealer, eventually becoming a pit boss at the Bonanza Casino.
She did endurance riding, and logged 3,000 miles.
After Jolene and Ken divorced, she went back to college in 1987 and earned associate degree in business. She graduated with honors and was on the dean's list.
Jolene worked for Washoe County; for her sister at Nita's Valley Property in Milton-Freewater; and for Umatilla County. She served as secretary vendor chairman at the Union County Fair for several years. While living in Milton-Freewater, Jolene met her long-time companion, Joe Davis. Together they traveled to Alaska and Bryce Canyon and made a home in Summerville.
Jolene loved the outdoors, especially in the summer. She would fish, garden, do her canning and travel. An avid hunter, she would get buck fever in anticipation of deer season. But her favorite season was elk. Not only would she shoot her own animals, she would field-dress them herself. Jolene also loved to go to the Nevada desert. She loved looking for arrowheads and the wild things that grew out there.
Jolene's favorite holiday was Christmas. She made candy and cookies for the holiday. In the winter, she enjoyed quilting and genealogy. She found out that her ancestors were part of the American Revolution. She would get excited every time she found a patriot she was related to.
Those who knew her say when she would laugh, she would have the whole room laughing.
Survivors include her long-time companion, Joe Davis, of Summerville; son and daughter-in-law, John and Kathy Quintal of Weston; daughter and son-in-law, Kenndall and Leon Warner of Milton-Freewater; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters, Lavone Booth of Reno, Nita Stoke of Milton-Freewater and Millie Jeakins of Homer, Alaska; brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Roxy Arnold of Homer, Alaska; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Muriel Jeakins; a brother, Leroy O'Dell; brother-in-law, Bill Booth; and nephew, Billy Wayne Booth.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Daughters of the American Revolution in care of Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth Street, La Grande, OR 97850.
