John Keck Wells, 89, formerly of Haines, died Feb. 22 in Portland. A graveside service and vault interment was held at Mount Calvary Cemetery today. A funeral Mass will be said at a later date at his parish, The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland.
John was born July 30, 1920, in Haines. He was raised and educated in Haines and graduated from Haines High School. He received his bachelor's degree from Linfield College in McMinnville and his master's degree from University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.
John served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Violanda Caprio in New York in 1944. She preceded him in death in 2006.
John was supervisor of a motor fleet for the U.S. Postal Service.
He is survived by one son, John Wells; two daughters, Joanne Ford and Rose Holland; sisters, Millie Wiesenbach and Helen Pfel, both of La Grande; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sons, Vincent in 1967 and Frank in 1990.
