John D. Manwell, Jr., age 48, of La Grande, died September 24, 2005 on Blalock Mountain near Milton-Freewater. A memorial service will begin at 11:00 am Saturday at the Nazarene Church with Pastor Dan Mielke officiating.
Mr. Manwell was born March 16, 1957 to John and Mavis Yetter Manwell in Red Bluff, California. He graduated from Red Bluff High School in 1975 and later from Humboldt State University with a degree in forest production. He became the resident forester for Diamond Lands in Lyman Springs, California. On October 7, 1989 he married Jann L. Phillips in Somerset, California.
They moved to Medford, where he worked as a forest engineer for Boise Cascade and later to La Grande where he was chief unit forester for Boise. In February of this year he became the Northeast Oregon regional manager for Forest Capital Partners.
He was a devoted husband and father and was always involved with his children's activities. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, camping, hiking and being with his family. He was a Registered Professional Forester and a member of the Society of American Foresters.
Survivors include his wife and sons, Benjamin, Evan and Jacob Manwell, all of La Grande; siblings, Malcolm Manwell of Santa Rosa, California, Cathie Adams of Spokane, Barbara Manwell of Folsom, California, Elizabeth Jackson of Red Bluff, California and Virginia Edwards of Littleton, Colorado and other relatives. His parents died earlier.
Contributions may be made to his children's education fund through Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main, Milton-Freewater, Oregon 97862.
