Jennie Shoman White

August 7, 1911 — February 7, 2009

Jennie Shoman White, age 97, of La Grande died February 7, 2009 at her home in La Grande. A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, February 13, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Summerville Cemetery Chapel. Committal and interment will follow at the Summerville Cemetery.

Jennie was born on August 7, 1911 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She came to Oregon as a young girl and graduated from Eastern Oregon Normal School (now EOU). She taught in a one room schoolhouse for five years. She was married to Lyle Howell until his death in 1969. In 1974 she married George White. He preceded her in death in 1982.

Jennie worked for ten years in the tax department at the Union County Courthouse. She worked for several insurance agencies and was a legal secretary for various attorneys. She was an active member and Past President of the American Legion Auxiliary and a member of the Red Hat Society. She traveled on many trips around the world with her cousin, Mildred. She lived for over 50 years on the family ranch in Cove. She was always one to help out when someone became ill. She was very generous and enjoyed needlework, crocheting and knitting.

Survivors include her niece, Ila Huff of La Grande; nephew, Ted Huff of Cove and other relatives and friends.

Those who wish may make contributions in her memory to the American Legion Auxiliary in care of Daniels~Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center, 1502 7th Street in La Grande.
