James Howard "Jim" Stoop, age 89, of Island City, died Thursday, September 18, 2003 at a local care facility. At his request there will be no public services. Arrangements are entrusted to Daniels Chapel of the Valley.
Mr. Stoop was born on November 2, 1913, the son of Charles and Josephine (Wies) Stoop in La Grande. He graduated from La Grande High School and then earned his Bachelors Degree in Forestry. He was a timber cruiser for the CCC's and worked for Justine Brothers in Eugene for a time. He then went to work for the Bureau of Land Management. During his time with the BLM he managed the Fort Vanoy Job Corp Center in Grants Pass from 1964 until 1967 when then President Nixon closed it down. He later moved to the Gold Beach area and retired from the BLM after 20 years of service.
Mr. Stoop was an avid fisherman and was a member and twice President of the Curry Anaromous Fisherman, who worked to re-establish salmon on the Rogue River and continue to do so. He was a life member of the Elks Lodge.
Survivors include his children, John Nicholson Stoop of Heidelberg, Germany, James Kendrick Stoop of Spokane, Chuck Stephen Stoop of Cave, Junction, Mary Jo Stoop of Portland and Sue Albers of La Grande; grandchildren, Tim, Jimmy, Danny, Laura Ann, Guy, Bart and Woody; companion, Nadine Stoop of Island City; and other relatives and friends.
