James "Bob" Robert Cash

April 5, 1921 — March 6, 2011

James Robert Cash, 89, of La Grande, died March 6 at Grande Ronde Hospital. His funeral service with Masonic rites will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at Loveland Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow at Island City Cemetery. A viewing for family and friends will run from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Loveland Funeral Chapel and at the conclusion of the funeral service.

James was born April 5, 1921, at Walla Walla, son of James D. and Helen M. (Wetzel) Cash. He attended school in Walla Walla and Heppner and graduated from La Grande High School.

In May 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. In August 1942, he married Barbara Jean Sharp in Glendale, Calif. He was an airplane machinist during the war and spent his time in the Pacific until November 1945. Upon returning home, he worked for The Observer, becoming production supervisor until 1967, when he went to work for Boise Cascade at the truck shop, retiring in 1984.

From 1959 to 1993, James had a cherry farm in Cove. He loved to fish and hunt with family and friends.

He is survived by his sons and their spouses, Jim and Nancy Cash of Salem and David and Marchelle Cash of La Grande; daughter and spouse, Kathleen and Mark Freels of Tigard; brother, Richard Cash of Cove; sister and spouse, Phyllis and Bill Wells of Newport; seven grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
