Jack Dean Zimmerman, age 74, of Union, died Thursday in Boise, Idaho. No public services are planned at this time but a future service will be published later by Daniels~Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center.
Mr. Zimmerman was born on October 27, 1934, one of the eighteen children of Jack Dean and Marie (Barlow) Zimmerman in Sac City, Iowa. He was raised and educated in Iowa before enlisting in the United States Air Force. He served during the Korean and Vietnam wars and retired as a Master Tech. Sergeant. After his retirement from the service he moved to Warrenton, Oregon and was the regional manager for Sears & Roebuck Company. He later owned a charter fishing company and was Harbor Master for Hammond and Warrenton. After his retirement from these positions he moved to Union where he became very active in the community. He served on the city council, the Carnegie Library Board, and was very active with the VFW Post in Union, serving as their commander. He was an advocate for Veteran's Affairs, including but not limited to helping to get the Regional VA Clinic to La Grande.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Zimmerman of Union; son, Joe Zimmerman of Boise, Margaret "Peg" Wallis of Burns, daughter, Debra Goosev of New Pine Creek, Oregon; four grandchildren, Brian Wallis, Jordan Wallis, Tanya Wadell and Jeffrey Wadell; and other relatives and many friends.
Those who wish may make contribution in memory of Mr. Zimmerman to the Union VFW or the VFW Food Bank in Union.
