Jack Dean Lassley

August 8, 1924 — May 3, 2010

Jack Dean Lassley, 85, of Sweet Home and formerly of La Grande, died May 3. A memorial service will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at Riverside Christian Church in Sweet Home. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

He was born Aug. 8, 1924, to Bert C. and Zadie (Moses) Lassley in Robinson, Kan. Jack graduated from La Grande High School.

During WWII he served in the Navy as a diesel mechanic on a landing ship tank. The LST 466 he was assigned to participated in the first LST landing at the Japanese hold, Lae New Guinea, and initial landings on several locations of the Philippine Islands. He received several medals, including four bronze stars.

Jack worked at Willamette Industries for over 35 years. He was a member of Wood Workers International.

He loved many cats over the years and never tired of playing with them. Jack grew gladiolus and roses. He also enjoyed and spent many hours in his shop where he worked on cars and small engines. He was like a little boy with a new toy when he bought his new 2004 Chevrolet Malibu. He also loved motorcycles.

Jack is survived by his daughters, Fairie Lynn Lassley of Albany, Elaine and her husband, Peter Evans, of Albany and Ledeana Lassley of Gates; one granddaughter; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, June, in October 2007; three brothers; and two sisters.

Memorial contributions may be made to Safe Haven Humane Society.
