Jack Clifford Eckstein, age 91 of La Grande and formerly of Elgin, died Wednesday, January 25, 2006 at the Grande Ronde Hosptial. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangement are entrusted to Daniels Chapel of the Valley.
Jack Clifford Eckstein was born on January 8, 1915, the son of William and Jennie (Stowell) Eckstein in La Grande, Oregon. He attended school at the Palmer Valley School house north of Elgin. Jack started working in the lumber business at a very early age and later owned several saw mills. On November 24, 1933 he married Margaret Cowan and the couple was married for 72 years. He lived for at time in Milton-Freewater. He was a member of the Hiram Lodge in Elgin and the Scottish Rite. Jack enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting and loved family poker games.
Survivors include wife Margaret Eckstein of La Grande; daughter Phyllis Eckstein of Elgin, Oregon, daughter and son-in-law Joyce and Andy Moore of Alburquere, New Mexico; two grandchildren; one great-granddaughter several nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. His parents, brothers, Ernie Eckstein and Clarence Eckstein; sisters, Clara Barlow and Bessie all preceded him in death.
