Jack Dean Dillavou

July 4, 1937 — September 22, 2002

Jack Dean Dillavou, age 65, of La Grande, died Sunday, September 22, 2002 at his home.


Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 27, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. at Daniels Chapel of the Valley with Pastor Rob Collins of Calvary Chapel officiating. Committal and interment will follow at the Summerville Cemetery. A reception will follow the committal service at Calvary Chapel in La Grande. Friends may call on Friday from 9:00 until 11:00 a.m. at Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

Jack was born on July 4, 1937, the son of Max and Bessie (Ritchey) Dillavou in Glidden, Iowa. He attended school in Bly, Oregon and graduated with the class of 1955. On January 13, 1956 he married Sara Joan Campbell and they raised two daughters, Hope and Joy.

Jack was employed at the Bly sawmill for twenty one years which included working in several departments before becoming a sawyer and eventually a supervisor.

On May 4, 1975 he married Judy (Berryman) Varney from La Grande. She had two boys, Jan & Dean, from a previous marriage and he continued to be an awesome Dad.

In the spring of 1991 Jack left the wood products industry and he and Judy moved to Yakima, Washington where they managed the Nendel's Hotel until their retirement in May of 2002. Upon their retirement they relocated to La Grande, Oregon.

Jack enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing, gold mining and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Dillavou of La Grande; daughters, Hope Chacon of Portland and Joy Joachim of Battleground, Washington; sons, Jan Varney of Jackson, Ohio and Dean Varney of La Grande; brothers, Jerry Dillavou of Pendleton and Mike Dillavou of Lakeview, Oregon; sister, Shirley Olson of Klamath Falls, Oregon; grandchildren, Cody, Kyle and Shane Joachim, Shylinn and Emily Varney and Olivia, Anthony, August and Emma Varney; and other relatives and friends. His parents and a brother, Rex Dillavou preceded him in death.
