Jack LeRoy Courtney, age 85, just two days short of his 86th birthday, of Perry, died Sunday, March 18, 2007 at the Grande Ronde Hospital. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 7th Street, La Grande.
Mr. Courtney was born March 20, 1921, the son of John LeRoy and Nora Edna (Arnett) Courtney in La Grande. He graduated from La Grande High School and during World War II served with the United States Navy. He served aboard the USS Enterprise as an Electrician's Mate. On July 12, 1952 he married Opal Mae "Mickey" Stringham in La Grande. He worked for Boise Cascade until retiring in 1982 and he ranched most of his life.
Mr. Courtney was a member of the La Grande Elks Lodge, the La Grande Eagles Lodge and the Farm Bureau. He loved to be in the hills, working fences, cattle or just looking at the scenery. He had a good sense of humor and always made people feel good.
Survivors include his wife, Mickey of Perry; daughter, Sherry Royston of La Grande; granddaughter, Sharman Lee Sams; great grandsons, Rashaan Foreman, Mekhi Foreman and Tucker Sams; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by brothers, Hubert, Lester, George and Burl Courtney and sisters, Marjorie Weir and Mildred Snodgrass.
