Ida Fern "Phippen" Schnore, age 99, 0f La Grande, and formerly of Elgin died December 18, 2011 at the Grande Ronde Hospital. At her request there will not be any public service at this time. Arrangements are entrusted to Daniels~Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center.
Ida was born on March 10, 1912, in Carey, Idaho to Frank W. and Sarah Pearl (Ford) Phippen. The family moved to Elgin in 1923. She graduated from Elgin High School in 1932. She married Melvin Schnore on June 1, 1935. They farmed the Schnore ranch on Indian Creek until 1945 when they moved to Elgin. She drove wheat truck and helped Melvin run the Joe Hallgarth ranch. She worked as clerk for Kernans variety store for several years. She was a member of the Elgin Christian Church. Melvin passed away in 1994. She moved to the Grande Ronde Retirement Residence in 2002 and then to Connie Seaman's care home in 2009.
She was preceded in death by all her siblings, Alton, Milton, Doyle and Cal Phippen, Erma Nelson and Ella Cummins. She is survived by nieces and nephews, Betty Kernen of Sisters, Oregon, Maxine Lee of Castle Rock, Washington, Larry Nelson of Salem, Oregon, Donna Evanoff of Salem, Oregon, Jerry Cummins of Portland, Oregon, Glenda Skinner of California, Phyllis Bechtel of Elgin, Oregon, Shirley Simmons of La Grande and Carol Hilsenkopp of Forest Grove, Oregon.
