Howard Nelson Scott, age 87, of La Grande, and formerly of Elgin and North Powder, died August 1, 2003 at his home in La Grande.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, August 4, 2003 at 2:30 p.m. at the Elgin Cemetery with Forrest Turner of North Powder and Clark Gray of Union conducting. Friends may call on Monday from 9:00 am until noon at Daniels Chapel of the Valley.
Mr. Scott was born on February 26, 1916 to Overton and Lula (Hackett) Scott on Cricket Flat, north of Elgin. He attended Fair View Grade School and graduated from Wallowa High School. Following graduation he attended a Trade School in Oakland, California and became a professional welder, a trade he used the rest of his life. He enjoyed hunting and traveling around the Northwest.
In 1939 he married Leona Gray in Oakridge, Oregon. He worked in the ship yards in the Bay area of California until returning to Cricket Flat in 1944. In 1945 he was drafted into the Navy and served until 1947. After his honorable discharge from the service he returned to Cricket Flat and farmed and also worked at times for Boise Cascade, Terry Trailers, Welding and Maintenance.
Survivors include his wife, Leona of La Grande; sisters, Sara Mae Horn of Hermiston and Hilda Chamberlain of Wenatchee, Washington; sister-in-law, Jackie Scott; and many other relatives and friends. His parents, sister, Hazel Jones and brother, Warren Scott preceded him in death.
