Howard C. Kiser, 78, of Lostine died June 22 in Union. A graveside service will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at the Lostine Cemetery.
Howard was born in Weiser, Idaho, on July 27, 1927, the son of William (Bill) Kiser and Agnes Olson Kiser. He attended Weiser schools, but took up the trade of buckerooing and working for the ranchers on Mann Creek as a young man. In 1945 he enlisted in the Army and served in World War II, receiving the Medal of Victory. In 1947 he returned to Weiser to continue the life of a cowboy. He married Nancy Thorson in May 1956 in Weiser. They lived in Weiser and surrounding areas.
Howard was employed by the Weiser Flour Mill for several years, but always remained true to horses, dogs and livestock. Howard and Nancy had four sons, all of which he was very proud. He taught them his way of life. He later moved to Lostine, where he has resided for the past 30 years. Twenty two of those years were spent in the home of his long time friend and caretaker, Sally Akin.
He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, David and Anita of Parma, Idaho, Mark and Lori of Omaha, Neb., and Scott and Bonnie of Polson, Mont.; six grandchildren; a sister, Jean Kuriatnyk of Portland; a brother, Jess Kiser of Joseph; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, Ross, his parents, three brothers and two sisters.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in his name to Lostine Grange.
