Hilda Mary Garrett

March 17, 1918 — March 9, 2003

Hilda M. Garrett, 84 of La Grande, died Sunday, March 9th at a local care facility.


A service will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 12th at the Zion Lutheran Church in La Grande with The Rev. Don Voeks officiating. Interment will be at the Island City Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday, from 4 until 7 p.m. at Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 7th Street in La Grande.


Mrs. Garrett was born on March 17, 1918 to John and Anna (Johnson) Lindgren in Lincoln, Nebraska where she was raised and educated. During her growing up years she kept the books for the family farm, a task for which she developed a real talent. After her marriage to James Bryan Garrett on May 6, 1936, they resided in Denver and Boulder, Colorado and surrounding areas. During World War II both she and her husband worked for the government as civilians. He worked as a mechanic for the motor pool while she worked at the ammunitions plant. In 1968 they came to permanently reside in La Grande where she and her husband worked as custodians for then Eastern Oregon College (now Eastern Oregon University). Mr. Garrett preceded her in death on May 29, 1968 but she continued working until health challenges forced her retirement in 1982 when she was 64.


Mrs. Garrett was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in La Grande where she was active in many of their affiliated groups and activities. She enjoyed quilting, yard work and gardening and she loved animals.


Survivors include her children, Dorothy Plumley of La Grande; Robert Garrett of Eureka, Montana; Mary Hildebrandt of La Grande; seven grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; many brothers, sisters other relatives and friends.
