Herman Lee Gunnels

October 20, 1944 — October 6, 2003

Herman Lee Gunnels, age 58, of La Grande, died October 6, 2003 in Reno, Nevada. A celebration of life will be held on Friday, October 10, 2003 at 3:00 p.m. at the First Christian Church. Viewing will be held on Thursday from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. at Daniels Chapel of the Valley.

Mr. Gunnels was born on October 20, 1944, the son of Leslie and Marjorie (Blair) Gunnels in Ava, Missouri. After his schooling he enlisted in the United States Army and served during the Cuban Missile Crisis. On March 16, 1962 he married Carol Mayberry in Walla Walla, Washington. They moved to Starkey in 1975 and in 1980 they moved to La Grande. He owned and operated Gunnels Brothers Inc. He loved his work in the woods.

Mr. Gunnels was a member of the Elks Lodge and enjoyed salmon fishing, vacationing, the casinos in Reno and Las Vegas, four-wheeling and his friends. He loved his family very much and they enjoyed many memorable vacations together.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Gunnels; children, Sandi and Frank Anderson, Ginger and Danny Webster, Lois and Doug Yearous and Lynn and Jeff Elliott all of La Grande; eight granddaughters and one grandson; brother, John Gunnels of Milton Freewater; sister and brother-in-law, Louise and Dick Clark of La Grande; numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
