Hazel Margaret Mumm Grover, 102, of La Grande, died May 24 at a local care center. At the request of the family, there will be no services.
Hazel was born Dec. 27, 1908, to August and Alma Christina (Timm) Mumm in Cody, Wyo. She moved with her family to Missoula, Mont., as a young child.
She attended the University of Montana, graduating in 1931. While attending the university, she was president of the Associated Women Students, a member of Kappa Tau Scholastic Honorary and member of Spurs and Mortar Board. She was also a life member of Sigma Kappa Sorority. After graduating, she served as secretary to the dean of men and dean of women at the University of Montana. In 1948, Hazel was elected president of the University Alumni Association.
In 1935, she married George "Bud" Grover, and they made their home in Deer Lodge, Mont. While living in Deer Lodge, Hazel was an active member of the community. She served as president of the Deer Lodge Women's Club, charter member of Chapter AG of P.E.O., and an elder and trustee in the Presbyterian Church. She also served as chairman of the Council of Churches.
Hazel had an interest in helping young people become the best they could be, volunteering as both a Girl Scout leader and den mother for the Boy Scouts.
In 1967, her husband, Bud, sold his pharmacy, "The Deer Lodge Drug," and they moved to Hamilton, Mont. She affiliated with Chapter AF of P.E.O. She worked as secretary for the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce from 1969 to 1973, and was a charter member of the Bitterroot Historical Society. In the late 1970s, Hazel became a member of St. Francis Church.
In 1999, Hazel and Bud moved to La Grande to be near their son, Dr. Joseph Grover. She became a member of Our Lady of the Valley Church.
Throughout her life, she maintained an interest in current political events and athletic activities, especially Grizzly football.
Hazel is survived by her son, Dr. Joseph Grover and his wife, Carrie Grover; three grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one step-great-grandchild; and seven nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George "Bud" Grover; and two sisters, Marge Wise and Helen Spaulding.
Memorial contributions may be made to the University of Montana Alumni Fund or to Chapter DK of P.E.O Scholarship Fund in care of Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth Street, La Grande 97850.
