Glenn B. Long

June 16, 1926 — January 3, 2004

Glenn B. Long, age 77, of Salem and formerly of Elgin and La Grande, died January 3, 2004 in Salem, Oregon. A celebration of life will begin at 2 pm on Friday, January 9, 2004 at Daniels Chapel of the Valley. Private interment will be held at the Elgin Cemetery.

Glenn was born to Carl Glenn Long and Rula (Stowe) Long at Long Ranch, east of Elgin. He attended school in Elgin and on September 13, 1946 he married Thelma Louise Bowden. They farmed on Cricket Flat, east of Elgin before moving to La Grande to work for Vern Igo at the Pepsi Cola plant as a bottler and delivery driver, where he remained for several years.

Glenn and his family moved to Pasco, Washington where he worked for the Cenex Corporation as a long haul tanker driver. His dream was to be a truck driver and this opportunity was a dream come true. He received a one million miles safe driving award for which he was very proud. After retiring Glenn was able to pursue his love of hunting and fishing with his children and grandchildren. He was an avid hunter and excellent marksman. Many trophies, including bear and cougar decorated his home. He loved the Minam river country and knew every trail and road. Late one evening at his hunting camp, the police showed up and asked for Glenn's help to find some lost people. Glenn took off with a flashlight at 10 pm and returned with them at 3 am. This was not the end of his rescue efforts! The next year he was called out again from his hunting camp and went to search for lost hunters at midnight. At 6:00 a.m. he returned safely to his camp with them. Glenn was a kind, quiet and thoughtful man that loved his family and friends. He will not be forgotten.
Survivors include his children and their spouses, Rocky and Cheryl Long of Oregon City and Linda and Kent Anderson of Oroville, California; three grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; a sister, Genevieve (Long) Wells of Elgin and other relatives and friends. His wife, Louise, died earlier.
