Glenn Kirkeby

September 3, 1927 — April 22, 2006

Glenn Kirkeby, 78 of Wallowa, formerly of Elgin, died April 22 at his home.

A graveside service will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Elgin Cemetery.

Mr. Kirkeby was born Sept. 3, 1927 to George and Margaret Orr Kirkeby in Bellingham, Minn. He graduated from Bellingham High School in 1945, and the family moved to Elgin.

He served in the Army at Hanford in Washington and graduated from Eastern Oregon Normal School.

In 1949 he married Iris Vogel. They moved to Forest Grove where he worked for the Forest Grove National Bank. In 1959 he began working fro the First State Bank of Elgin with his parents and later became president of the bank.

He was a member of the Oregon State Bankers Association and president of the Western Independent Bankers Association. He served on the board of Grande Ronde Hospital and was president from 1977 to 1981. He was a member of the La Grande Country Club, the Elgin Chamber of Commerce, the Elgin Masonic Lodge and helped establish the Elgin Community Center.

He retired to Wallowa and served on the board of the Wallowa Library and was a member of the AARP chapter and the Alpine Meadows Golf Course. He enjoyed playing golf, gardening and being with his family.

Survivors include his wife of Wallowa; children and their spouses, Steve and Verla Kirkeby and Becky and John Keller, all of La Grande; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. A brother Orrin, a son Kim and two granddaughters all died earlier.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital in care of Bollman Funeral Home, 315 W. Main St., Enterprise.
