Mrs. Titus was born on November 13, 1911, the daughter of Conrad John and Marie Margaret (Horch) Schuetz in Odessa, Washington. She was one of ten children and helped with her siblings growing up in Ritzville, Washington and then Rathdrum, Idaho, where she graduated from high school. On March 28, 1936 she married Marvin W. Titus in La Grande. They lived at Haines and on a ranch near Telecaset before moving to Union in 1940.
Over the years she worked at almost every business in Union, the drug store, Union hotel, hardware store, Ben Franklin and even baked pies for the Knotty Pine. She was the Fire Chief's wife for 32 years and was always helping around the fire station. They were both very involved in the community but Gertrude also gave much time to the schools with PTA and being room mother many times. The Union High School Class of 1960 elected them Citizen's of the Year. She was a member of the Union Methodist Church, Rebekkah Lodge and the Junior Women's Club. She was a seamstress for both the women and the men of Union for many years. She enjoyed cooking and loved to crochet. Her potholders can be found all over the world as she was very generous with sharing them.
Survivors include her children, Norman and Carol Titus of Lihue, Hawaii, Ron and Dorothy Titus of Union, Richard Titus of Salem, Willora George and Susan Hinzpeter of Baker City and Cinda and Pete Petersen of Union; eleven grandchildren; twenty-one great grandchildren; sister, Martha Post of Coeur‘d Alene, Idaho; sister-in-law, Carolyn Schuetz of Canby; several nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions can be made to the Bradley Angle House, Bobcat Foundation, Union Fire Department, Breast Cancer Research or a charity of choice in care of Daniels~Knopp.
