Gertrude Marie Murphy, 80, of Portland and formerly of La Grande died November 14 at a care center. A memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Portland. Burial will be in La Grande.
Mrs. Murphy was born November 20, 1923, to Walter and Marie Theresa Sarnowski Goletz in Phoenix, Illinois. She graduated from high school in Harvey, Illinois in 1941 and married Howard Joseph Murphy 10 days later.
She was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening, crafts, cooking, sewing and making both wine and beer. She won many blue ribbons at the Union County fair, and had a shop for many years on Spruce St., Vintage Cottage, where she sold supplies and equipment for homemade wine and beer.
Survivors include children, H. Patrick Murphy of Olympia, Washington, J. Michael Murphy of Long Beach, Washington; 5 grand-children and 1 great-grandchild; a brother, Walter Goletz, Jr., of Demotte, Indiana, and a sister, Pearl Himschoot of Franklin, North Carolina. Her husband, a sister, Dorothy Buczek, died earlier.
