Gerald Avon Sherman

December 8, 1935 — September 11, 2008

Gerald Avon Sherman, 72, of La Grande, died Sept. 11 at his home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in La Grande.

Gerald was born Dec. 8, 1935, in Baker to Vernon and Marguerite (Fuzi) Sherman. He was raised and educated in Baker where he attended St. Frances Academy. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1954 to 1958.

He married Judy Atteberry on Jan. 16, 1960. He then went to work driving a truck for Ben's Transfer for several years.

He graduated from Eastern Oregon College in 1971 and then went to work for Cal Pacific Utilities in 1971. In 1981, he became district manager for Oregon Trail Electric Co-op.

He enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, camping, traveling south for the winter and spending time with his grandchildren.

He was a member of Union County Economic Development Corp., La Grande Country Club, Rotary, elks, Knights of Columbus and many others.

Gerald is survived by his wife, Judy; three children, Mark Sherman of La Grande, Teresa (John) Stebbins of La Grande and Matthew Sherman of Boise; brothers, Gregg Sherman of Baker City and David (Kathy) Sherman of Baker City; seven grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Norris.
