George Raymond Simonis

George Raymond Simonis, age 80, of La Grande, died December 5, 2011 at the Grande Ronde Hospital. A funeral will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Monday at Daniels~Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center, 1502 7th Street in La Grande.


Mr. Simonis was born on May 4, 1931, the son of Perry James and Mae Rhoda (Miller) Simonis in La Grande. He graduated from La Grande High School and on May 11, 1949 he married Darleen McLaughlin. George was a baker in Coos Bay, and became an accomplished cake decorator. In 1951 George and Darleen returned to La Grande where he worked at Mt. Emily lumber and then the La Grande Boise Cascade sawmill as a planer and shipping foreman until his retirement, along with farming his land near Ladd Canyon. George enjoyed hunting and fishing, the biggest love of his life was his wife Darleen and their family.


Survivors include his wife, Darleen, of La Grande; children, Jeanne Simonis of Walla Walla, Susan and Bill Thomas of Union and Janet Stowell of La Grande; brothers, Henry Simonis of La Grande, Wayne Simonis of La Grande and Joe Simonis of Montana; nine grandchildren; twenty four great grandchildren and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter Nancy Lee and his brothers, Ernest Simonis and James Simonis. Those who wish may make a contribution in his memory to the Shiners' Children's Hospital in care of Daniels~Knopp.
