George Arnold Johnson, age 64, of Meacham, died Friday, September 19, 2003 at his home. A gathering for family and friends will be held at the home of his brother at the Old Kamela Inn in Kamela. Private family burial will be at the Grandview Cemetery.
Mr. Johnson was born on January 2, 1939, the son of Frank and Irene Lillian (Allen) Johnson in La Grande. He attended La Grande School and began his long military career in 1956 when he enlisted in the United States Navy. When he was honorably discharged from the Navy he enlisted in the United States Army. After his honorable discharge from the Army he joined the Navy CB's. He retired as a P.O. 1st Class in 1984. He was extremely proud of his military career. After his retirement to moved to Meacham and was a member of the American Legion, the VFW, the Eagles and was a former member of the Grange. Mr. Johnson enjoyed leatherwork, ceramics, hunting, and fishing and loved football.
Survivors include his sons, Edward Arnold Johnson, Billie Frank Johnson and Brian Robbins; several grandchildren; siblings, Loran Caldwell of Meacham, Ethelyn Baker of Hermiston, Rosetta Medlock of Meacham, Coleen Pope of San Diego, California and Kay Hays of Madison, Wisconsin; many nieces and nephews; former wife, Edith Marie Johnson of Pendleton; and other relatives and friends.
Those who wish may make contributions in memory of Mr. Johnson to the American Legion or the VFW in care of Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 7th Street, La Grande, Oregon 97850.
