George Elmer Ashton

George Elmer Ashton, age 77, of Elgin and formerly of McCall, Idaho, died April 22, 2009 at St. Alphonsus Medical Center in Boise, Idaho.

A potluck service in memory of George Elmer Ashton is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday at the Elgin Community Center.

Mr. Ashton, 77, of Elgin, died April 22 at St. Alphonsus Medical Center in Boise.



Arrangements are entrusted to Daniels~Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center.

Mr. Ashton was born on May 25, 1931, the son of Elmer Isaac Joseph and Blanche (Parkin) Ashton in Woodruff, Utah. He was raised in Morgan, Utah. He married Marlene Madden and they lived in Mc Call, Idaho for many years where he worked as a timber faller. In 1967 they moved to La Grande where George ran a McCullough Chainsaw and Snow mobile shop for many years. The marriage ended in divorce and he later married Claire Crawford. He worked for Boise Cascade until his retirement. He enjoyed the Boise Cascade Bass Tournament and was a volunteer for the Elgin Fire Department. He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed rafting, snowmobiling and gardening and then canning what he raised. He had a workshop where he welded horseshoe and other metal lawn ornaments.

Survivors include his daughters and their spouses, Susan Procsal of La Grande, Pode and Don Lampkins of La Grande, Diane and Kim Rollins of Burns, Rhonda and Randy Smith of La Grande, Paula and Shane Moe of North Powder and Amy and John Williams of Pendleton; sisters, Lorraine Smith of Utah, Bobbie Stephens of Oklahoma, Mona Parks of Utah and Della Allen of Joseph; eighteen grandchildren; ten great grandchildren and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by a brother, Joel Ashton.
