Evelyn Hagey Wagoner, 96, of La Grande, died April 2 at a local care center in Baker City. At her request, there will be no viewing or services.
Evelyn Elizabeth Hagey was born Oct. 4, 1914, to George Frederick and Martha Ellen (Hopkins) Hagey in Starkey. She attended eight grades of school in Starkey and attended her freshman year in
La Grande. Her sophomore and junior years were in Cove where she was on the track team and played volleyball, basketball and baseball. She was May Queen her junior year. Evelyn graduated from Robert A. Long Senior High School in Longview, Wash.
She finished Longview Business College and was a secretary for Pacific Straw Paper and Board in Longview. She was manager for Sperry and Hutchinson Company from 1961 until they closed their stores in 1968. She kept track of sales for Baker, Pendleton and La Grande.
She was a member of WWI Auxiliary of La Grande and VFW Auxiliary of La Grande and secretary for the La Grande Business and Professional Women. She was a member of Kind Deeds Club, secretary for Union County Seniors when the senior center was being organized, and was mother advisor for a Tri Hi Y group of girls in Portland.
Evelyn married Edward Roben in 1936 in Seattle, Wash. There were three children from that marriage. Edward died in 1947 in the veterans hospital in Vancouver, Wash. In October of 1948, she married William Oscar Ayars, who died in 1966. In March 1982, she married Gibbs T. Wagoner, who died in 1991.
Besides her parents, and her husbands, Evelyn was preceded in death by five brothers, two sisters, a son and a step-son. She is survived by two daughters, five step-daughters, one step-son, three grandsons, one granddaughter, 11 step-grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
