Evelyn Marie Johnstone

Evelyn Marie Johnstone, age 96, of Vancouver, Washington and formerly of La Grande, Oregon, went peacefully to be with the Lord on July 22, 2017. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 12, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Daniels~Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center, 1502 7th Street in La Grande.

Evelyn was born on June 3, 1921 in the Grande Ronde Valley to Clarence M and Prudence R. (Kame) Carter. She attended grade school in the valley and graduated from La Grande High School in 1939. She earned a junior certificate at Eastern Oregon College and a B.S. from the University of Oregon. She enlisted as a Wave in the Navy during WWII and served two years. She returned to the University of Oregon to complete her requirements for a teaching certificate and taught high school for several years.

Evelyn married George A. Johnstone on May 28, 1957 at Hinson Memorial Baptist Church in Portland, Oregon. Together they had a trucking business in Portland. In 1971 family illness caused them to return to the Grande Ronde Valley to farm the Carter family farm for Evelyn's parents. Evelyn and George operated the family wheat farm for 39 years. Evelyn became a member of the First Baptist Church in La Grande on December 2, 1973. Evelyn and George had no children but were blessed with 57 years of marriage. Evelyn and George moved to a retirement residence in July of 2010 in Vancouver, Washington due to George's failing health.

Evelyn is preceded in death by her husband, George A. Johnstone and her parents, Clarence and Prudence Carter and sisters Dorothy Jean Carter and Iris May Langdon. She is survived by a niece, Judy Gilbert.
