Elmon John Haefer, age 74, of La Grande died February 12, 2004 at his home from what is thought to be heart complications. A potluck celebration of life will begin Saturday at noon at the Cove Sportsmen's Club. The Rev. Mark Schlessman of the First Christian Church of La Grande will officiate. The services will also honor the memory of Elmon's wife, Margaret, who died in 1998. Following the services, there will be a potluck luncheon. Please bring a dish and join with family and friends for a time of fellowship.
Mr. Haefer was born on October 6, 1929, in Cove to John and Sandra (Johnson) Haefer. He went to school in Cove and played baseball, football and basketball. He joined the Navy in October of 1950 to serve in the Korean War and was honorably discharged in August of 1954. Mr. Haefer married Margaret Y. Rundall on July 3, 1955 in Cove.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, motorcycling, snowmobiling and watching the Portland Trail Blazers. Mr. Haefer also enjoyed trap shooting and was a member of the Cove Sportsman Club.
Survivors include his children and their spouses, Kathleen Knight of La Grande and Michael Elmon and Laura Haefer of La Grande and five grandchildren. A sister, Irene Wilcox died earlier.
