Elmer Theodore Miller, who had just celebrated his 100th birthday, died October 3, 2008 at his home. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2008 at 11:00 at Daniels~Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center, 1502 7th Street in La Grande. Committal and interment will follow at the Grandview Cemetery.
Mr. Miller was born on September 29, 1908, the son of Theodore and Leona (Ashmeed) Miller, in Hayden, Idaho. When Elmer was seven years old, in 1915, his parents traveled, by wagon train with five other children, to Union. They all rode in the wagon except for Elmer, who rode his horse, Kit, all the way. He went to school in Union. He met Dillie Bennett and they were married on October 16, 1929 and were married for 78 years until her death on October 7, 2007.
The Millers moved from Union in 1934 to Burns where he worked for Edward Hines Lumber Company for 15 years. They moved back to La Grande in 1948 where he bought his ranch. He ran darie cows for many years. He also raised hay for his cows, which he called his "Old Girls", and grain and wheat. He loved his ranch and cows. He was a kind and quiet man. He was known for his stories he would tell about the "Old Days". He was loved very much by his family and friends. He loved fishing, camping and traveling in his motor home. Phillip's Lake was one of his favorite places.
He left many friends and family, including his daughter, Gerry Montgomery of La Grande and son, Larry Miller of Graham, Washington. He had seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A son Marvin Miller preceded him in death. He was from a family of eleven children, four brothers and four sisters preceded him in death. Two sisters survive him, Myrna and Eva.
Those who wish may make contributions in memory of Mr. Miller to the 1st Christian Church, 901 Penn Street in La Grande.
