Elma "May" White

Elma "May" White, age 91, of La Grande, died March 30, 2011 at a local care facility. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Daniels~Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center, 1502 7th Street in La Grande.

May was born August 26, 1919 in Winthrop, Washington to Perry and Lillie B. (Miller) Clark. She was married to Lewis Guy Terry. The couple was divorced on June 26, 1953. The couple had two sons, Virgil and Dexter Terry.

On September 18, 1954, May married Melvin R. White at Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. The couple later moved to La Grande and purchased their home at 1418 Jackson Avenue in 1959. May lived at this same home until the fall of 2009 when she was admitted to Evergreen Vista Care Facility.

May and Melvin were avid rock collectors and spent much of their free time in the deserts of Eastern Oregon searching for rocks. The inside and outside of their home in La Grande displays the many beautiful rocks they collected. May and Mel called their enterprise, M and M Rocks. May enjoyed taking care of her cockatiel birds. She was a member of the Union County Search and Rescue Team, the C.B. Radio Club and the Blue Mountain Gem Club. May was also an active member of the Crossroads Community Church in La Grande.

May is the last living child of her siblings. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mel White and her son, Raymond "Dexter" Terry. She is survived by her son, Virgil Terry of Long Beach, California; grandson, David Terry of Glendora, California and granddaughter, Michelle Terry of London, England; and other relatives and friends.
