Ella M. Zumwalt

August 16, 1918 — July 5, 2007

Ella M. Zumwalt, 88, formerly of La Grande, died July 5, in Clarkston, Wash.

A graveside service will begin 2 p.m. Tuesday at Grandview Cemetery in La Grande. Viewing will run from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday at Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home.

Ella was born on Aug. 16, 1918, to Walter and Maude Baker at a government owned hospital on the Chase Indian Reservation in Chase, British Columbia, Canada. When she was 5, her family moved to Chehalis, Wash. She later lived in Eureka, Mont., where she married William Wayne Workman on May 21, 1935. The couple had three children.

Ella later moved to La Grande where she married Howard O. Zumwalt on Dec. 7, 1954. She was a proofreader for The Observer before finally settling in Milton-Freewater in 1977.

Ella was a charter member of Salon No. 707-8&40, a past state president of the Oregon Rural Letter Carriers Auxiliary, a president of the American Legion Auxiliary No. 43, 50 year member of the V.F.W., member of the Milton-Freewater Golf Course and member of Latah County Idaho Genealogical Society.

Survivors include her children, Alma Lee Merrill of Touchet, Wash., Rod Workman of Milton-Freewater and Patricia Romine of Clarkston, Wash.; six grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, eight great great grandchildren and other relatives. Her two husbands, William Workman and Howard Zumwalt, both preceded her in death.
