Beth lived in Westerville, Ohio, where she graduated from high school. She received a master's degree and a doctorate from the Ohio State University, where she specialized in aquatic biology.
In 1971, she met Don Hair and they were married on Jan. 15, 1972, in Westerville, Ohio. They lived in Put-In-Bay, Ohio. In 1978, the couple moved to Idaho when Don began working for the U.S. Forest Service. After Don retired in 2003, they moved to La Grande.

Those who knew her say Beth made lasting friendships wherever she went. She enjoyed knitting, bird watching, cutting firewood, picking huckleberries, reading, volunteering and being with friends and family.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests feeding someone that is hungry, helping someone in need, living a good life, being a kind person, making a donation to a food bank or shelter and living "green".
