Dr. Bryce J. Young

June 3, 1930 — February 4, 2004

Dr. Bryce J. Young, age 73, of College Place and formerly of La Grande, died Wednesday, February 4, 2004 while cycling in Argentina. A service will be held on Sunday, February 15, 2004 at 1:30 p.m. at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in La Grande. Interment will be held later.

Dr. Young was born on June 3, 1930, the son of Bryce L. and Marjorie (Mallett) Young in Glendive, Montana. He spent most of his early years in Miles City, Montana where he graduated from high school. He then attended Walla Walla College and did his medical training at Loma Linda University in Loma Linda, California. He took most of his eye training at White Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles, California. He established a medical practice in Missoula, Montana and later practiced for a year in Roseburg before establishing his practice in La Grande. He retired in 1992 after 31 years in business.

On September 28, 1958 he married Joylyn Jennings. Dr. Young traveled extensively over his lifetime. In the early 1970's he traveled to the Middle East and in 1971 he made the first of many mission trips to Africa including Kenya, Uganda and Zimbabwe. He sailed himself across the Pacific Ocean and made trips to the Philippines and Argentina on bird watching expeditions, as he was an avid bird watcher. He enjoyed visiting family, going on walks with his grandchildren, hiking and backpacking. He was a member of Rotary International.

Survivors include his children, David Young of Longview, Washington, Karen Young of Seattle, Washington and Russell Young of College Place, Washington; grandchildren, Ethan and Ericka Young of Longview, Washington; sister, Ginger Mackie of Cove; and other relatives and friends. His wife Joylyn Young preceded him in death.
