Dr. Treve Berlin Lumsden

Dr. Treve Berlin Lumsden, age 78, of La Grande, died Saturday, August 14, 2004 at home with his family after an extended illness.

Doctor Lumsden was born on November 3, 1925, in Los Angeles, California to Lucile Messner and Treve Berlin Lumsden. The family moved to La Grande when he was twelve and Treve graduated from La Grande High School. He joined the Navy and under the c-12 program completed pre-med training at Willamette University, after which he attended and graduated from Tulane University Medical School.

Doctor Lumsden went on to serve as a flight surgeon for the Air Force during the Korean War. Returning to Seattle, Washington, he was a resident at Providence Hospital, where he met his wife, Patricia Welsh. They were married in La Grande on June 25, 1951, and Dr. Lumsden began his medical practice that same year. He served the community for forty-nine years and was a member of the AMA and a fellow of the Academy of Family Practice. He was actively involved with Northwest Medical Teams and as a volunteer, traveled with them to Northern Iraq, Somalia and Panama to provide humanitarian aid.

Survivors include his wife and their three children: Kathleen Lumsden de Torres of Rochester, New York, Treve Bernard Lumsden of Beaufort, North Carolina and Heide Ann Thomas of Cove, Oregon. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and his sister, Anne Kirkpatrick of Baker City, Oregon.

At the request of the deceased there will be no public services. Memorials may be made to the Ronald McDonald House or Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church youth program, care of Daniels Chapel of the Valley, 1502 7th Street, La Grande, Oregon 97850.
