Douglas "Gene" Orson Holmes

Douglas Orson "Gene" Holmes, age 88, of Cove died February 21st at a local care facility. No public services will be held. Interment will be at the Union Cemetery.

Mr. Holmes was born on December 12, 1921, the son of Willis Orson and Loraine Winifred (Cloud) Holmes in La Grande. On July 31, 1941 he married Betty Lou Powell in Weiser, Idaho. He worked as a mechanic, firts for Roy Farnam and later for the La Grande City Shops until his retirement in 1983. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge and was a volunteer firefighter for the La Grande Fire Department. He enjoyed boating and worked on boat motors for Two GIs part time for many years. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and bowling. His wife preceded him in death on July 29, 1995.

Survivors include his children and their spouses, Judy and Myron Wagoner of Cove and Tom and Sue Holmes of La Grande; five grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his daughter, JoAnn Holmes Sink and a grandson, Shawn Cochrane.
