Dorothy Rood Starr, 90, of Beaverton and formerly of
La Grande, died March 7 in Portland with her family by her side. A memorial service will be held Sunday at Beaverton Lodge. Lincoln Memorial Park & Funeral Home in Portland is in charge of arrangements.
Dorothy was born April 30, 1918, the third of Peder and Brita Rood's four daughters in Averill, Minn.
She left home as a teenager and worked in Moorhead, Minn., and Fargo, N.D. At the age of 20 she visited her sister in Portland. She liked the West so much she did not return to her home town until a visit she made last year with her children for her 90th birthday.
In 1942 she married Warren B. Starr. They were married for 51 years until his death in 1993. They lived in Roseburg, Brookings, Portland and North Bend before settling in Lewiston. They lived in Lewiston for 30 years and then moved to La Grande in 1987 to be close to grandchildren. In 2004, Dorothy moved to Beaverton to be near her daughter.
Those who knew her say Dorothy was about as resilient a person as anyone would ever meet.
Dorothy is survived by her son, David and his wife, Linda, of Middleton, Idaho; daughter, Bonnie of Beaverton; two grandchildren; and four great-grand children. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters and husband.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Pastoral Services Department at St. Vincent's Hospital, 9205 S. W. Barnes Road, Portland 97225.
