Dorothy "Jean" Cuthbert

February 4, 1911 — April 15, 2011

Dorothy Jean Cuthbert, 100, of La Grande, died April 15 at her home with family by her side. Her memorial service will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church in La Grande.

She was born Feb. 4, 1911, to Arthur Bell and Olive Jean (Harless) Johnson at Oklahoma City, Okla. She spent her earlier years in California.

She attended Occidental College one year with the balance of schooling completed at Eastern Oregon State College where she earned a master's degree in English. On April 4, 1930, she married Phillip T. Cuthbert. In 1954, they moved to the Grande Ronde Valley and settled on Sandridge Farm.

Jean taught English composition and other English-related courses at Eastern Oregon State College for 13 years. She became director of composition at Eastern. She retired at the age of 64. Jean was a member of the local P.EO. women's organization and a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church. She was also a long-time supporter of the Grande Ronde Symphony Association.

Jean loved gardening and growing all kinds of flowers and berries. She was always happy to share her garden with friends. Jean had a lifelong love of the ocean and swimming and was happiest in the sun.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Phillip and Carole Cuthbert of Castaic, Calif., Chloe Stewart of Tigard and John and Marita Cuthbert of La Grande; 12 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
