Donna J. "Jean" (Swart) Crandall, 64, formerly of La Grande, died May 12 in Madras. A memorial service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Bel Air Funeral Home in Madras.

Jean was born Dec. 16, 1945, the fourth of nine children to Elmer Roy Swart and Evelyn (Bowen) Swart. The family lived in Durkee until 1946 when they moved to La Grande. The family moved to Umatilla in 1960.

Jean married Larry Long in 1963 and they had two children: LaNaya in 1963 and Jim in 1966. Jean moved the children to Madras in 1969 and she lived there for the rest of her life. Jean married Carol Crandall in March of 1971. They were life-long partners.

Jean loved her family and friends and always enjoyed being around them. She especially loved the little ones and was always willing to hold and comfort them.

Jean loved crafting and she taught herself how to sew and crochet. She liked to give away the things she made to family and friends. Jean loved gardening and canning foods from the garden for many years.

One of her greatest joys in recent years was exploring the Ochoco Mountains with Carol.

Jean is survived by her husband, Carol; daughter, LaNaya and her husband, Rob Strouse; son, Jim Crandall and his wife, Tami Forrest; step-son, Mark and his wife, Angela Crandall; step-daughter, Trina Crandall; several grandchildren; one-great-grandson; siblings, Barbara Lesser, Kathy Metcalf, Jerry Swart, Tom Swart, Karen Brooks, David Swart, Dan Swart and Bob Sward; and numerous nieces and nephews.
