Donald Eugene Mathena, 66, of Elgin died Sept. 18 in Ontario. A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Elgin Seventh-day Adventist Church with a potluck meal following in the church hall.

Mr. Mathena was born June 27, 1938, to Ralph and Clara Mathena in Walla Walla. The family lived in Black Diamond and Aurora. He served in the Army and married Beverly Bristol in 1985. The couple lived in Battle Ground, Wash., Imbler and Elgin. He worked in landscaping, operating heavy equipment and for Beck's Construction. He was disabled in an accident on the job.

He was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and enjoyed hunting, fishing, cutting firewood for other people, deep sea fishing and helping other people.

Survivors include his wife of Elgin; children, Lloyd Bristol and Michael Bristol, both of Elgin, and Lee Bristol of La Grande; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
